Beyond the stepped wedge: The practical appeal and efficiency of staircase designs

Kelsey Grantham
Kelsey is a Research Fellow at Monash University SPHPM. She completed her PhD " Statistical Methods For The Design And Analysis Of Longitudinal Cluster Randomized Trials " at Monash University in 2021.

Stepped wedge cluster randomised trials are frequently used, yet they can impose a significant data collection burden on participating clusters. Staircase designs have emerged as a compelling and more cost-efficient alternative to stepped wedge designs, allowing clusters to transition to the intervention sooner while contributing data over fewer measurement periods. In this seminar, I explore both the practical appeal and statistical efficiency of staircase designs. The presentation begins by examining real-world trials to highlight where this design is most advantageous and why it appeals to trialists. I then present key efficiency results, focusing on their implications for trial planning and practice, before concluding with a brief look at upcoming research into potential pitfalls and guidance for staircase designs.

Kelsey Grantham is a Senior Research Fellow in Biostatistics at Monash University’s School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Her work focuses on advancing statistical methodology for cluster randomised trials (studies that evaluate the impact of interventions delivered to entire groups, or “clusters,” such as hospitals). Kelsey leads a research program developing the statistical theory and practical guidance for streamlined “staircase” designs, alongside overseeing the design and analysis of several cluster randomised trials. She was recently awarded an NHMRC Investigator Grant to pursue further work on staircase designs.

This seminar will be held via Zoom. It will not be recorded.
