Margarita Moreno Betancur Appointed Chair of ViCBiostat as John Carlin Retires

ViCBiostat is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Margarita Moreno‑Betancur as the new Chair of ViCBiostat, following the retirement of Professor John Carlin.

Margarita has been a key member of ViCBiostat since joining in a postdoctoral position in 2014 and is widely recognised for her contributions to biostatistical methodology, training, and collaborative research; most prominently in the field of causal inference research, which she now leads within the network. In taking on the role, Margarita expressed her enthusiasm for carrying forward ViCBiostat’s vision of being a world-leading, cross-institutional biostatistical research hub progressing statistical methods that will lead to better health. Her leadership will guide the next phase of the centre’s growth, ensuring that ViCBiostat remains at the forefront of methodological innovation, biostatistical leadership development and research translation.

This transition marks the conclusion of John Carlin’s long and distinguished tenure as Chair. John led the establishment of the ViCBiostat network through a successful grant under the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence scheme (2012-2016). Thanks to his leadership, ViCBiostat was soon recognised for its national leadership in biostatistics and continues to provide training, advocacy and support to the next generation of biostatistical leaders.

ViCBiostat extends its warmest thanks to John for his exceptional vision and dedication over many years. His contributions have left an enduring legacy, and the centre will continue to benefit from the strong foundations he helped build. Although now free of formal responsibilities, he plans to continue to be involved in ViCBiostat activities.

We look forward to the next chapter under Margarita’s leadership and invite the ViCBiostat community to join us in congratulating her on this appointment and in celebrating John’s outstanding contributions.
