Modern methods of psychometric analysis are model based. They can provide greater insight into the performance of items and scales than conventional, 'classical' approaches.

This talk will introduce Item Response Theory (IRT) and variants such as the Rasch model. The ways in which IRT can identify well and poorly performing items and locate them on the underlying dimension they tap will be demonstrated.  Techniques for item selection, for studying biased items, and for identifying aberrant or inefficient response scales will presented.  I will discuss Computerized Adaptive Testing, which can reduce burden on respondents and increase measurement precision and will review software for model fitting.
